Footbballers Return With Support
Published: October 30, 2009

A group of Road View, St. Peter, young men, who opted to kick against negative lifestyles by banding together as a football team, have not only scored a success in their first encounter but have attracted the admiration and corporate support of a neighbouring developer.

Bjorn Bjerkhamn, chairman of Saint Peter's Bay S.R.L with some of the members of the Road View Rovers football team.

Ranging in age from 14 to 35, the newly-formed Road View Rovers, flying the banner of Saint Peter’s Bay, entered this year’s northern Independence football tournament, “St. Peter Ah Come From” with no previous experience and kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 victory against Boscobel last weekend.

More impressive than their victory was the fact that the team used their bare hands and any implements they could find to carve out a playing field from a long abandoned and heavily overrun area of land in the nearby Cemetery Lane, which they use for their training sessions.

Bjorn Bjerkhamn, chairman of Saint Peter’s Bay, visited the field earlier this week and stood in awe at what the team has accomplished so far. He said afterwards: “The fact that these young men took the initiative to pull themselves together as a team demonstrates the kind of positive outlook so sadly lacking among many of their age today. What they have done is admirable and we at Saint Peter’s Bay are proud to back them, not only in the tournament but as they develop and make their dream to become a force in mainstream football a reality.”

Team manager, Shawn Toppin, noted that the name Road View Rovers once belonged to a popular team from the area and it was their intention to return the name to the prominence it previously enjoyed, starting with their participation in the current St. Peter tournament.

He also thanked Saint Peter’s Bay for its contribution stating: “The support of has strengthened our spirit in this tournament and our determination to carve a name for ourselves in the future of national football. So far, we have cleared and created our own playing field for serious practice sessions and our next step is to secure proper equipment, including goal bars and nets.

“We are truly thankful for the support of Saint Peter’s Bay, a development in the heart of our community, and we are confident that with the passion of residents and members of the club, we can put the name Road View Rovers back on the lips of football fans across Barbados in the not too distant future.”

The Saint Peter’s Bay luxury residential community is nearing completion and will be launching sales this December.  The company adopted Alexandra School three years ago and continues to support the school as well as other causes in St. Peter where the community is located.
